As others are posting it really depends on your software needs.  If you 
absolutely need MS software then you may be better served with vista.  
My system is very similar to yours (amd_64x2, 4 Gb, nvidia 128 mb).  I 
run Ubuntu (linux), this is my home/work laptop and it gets a work out.  
It is extremely rare I need anything in windows and for that I have 
vbox.  Once properly setup windows resides on it's "desktop" at 
fullscreen.  What I don't do is heavy gaming so I don't need the 
software for WoW, etc.  I do manipulate 20 Mb picts with GIMP.

Personally, I would recommend going with Ubuntu with virtual MS.  You 
have the horse power to handle it and Ubuntu vs. Vista will prove to be 
less demanding on your system.
