Can one get straight to username entry at login in 9.10?

I don't think there's a way to do that with the default version of gdm in 
karmic. You can, however, install gdm-2.20 (the version shipped with 
Jaunty) from karmic universe and revert gdm back to it's previous 
behavior and configuration options.

Note:
You will save yourself much gnashing of teeth if you do the following 
before installing gdm-2.20 and restarting your session.

$ sudo mkdir /usr/X11R6
$ sudo ln -s ../bin /usr/X11R6/bin
