how to find wireless networks?

That appears to be what I was looking for:
sudo apt-get install wifi-radar
sudo wifi-radar

Your network manager should eventually find all available wireless networks in
your area but I found it much faster to use WiFi-radar available in the
universe repository at least for 8.04. Right clicking the network manager
icon after you machine has run awhile will likely show you the area wireless
networks also but can take quit a bit of time to accumulate them.
