I've run across this in the past (using old nVidia card & compiz) &
found that is I add 'Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"' to the xorg.conf
the problem goes away. Sample of mine:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "TwinView" "0"
    Option "metamodes" "1280x1024 +0+0"
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
