I would add that prior versions allowed opening *.doc, *.xls, and *.ppt files using either OpenOffice.org or Codeweavers/wine/native app depending on the file association settings for KDE. Now I can't open anything without first extracting to disk.

Hi, 
I'm not sure if this is how I find out about this or not, but I'll give it a try. The new KDE uses a newer version of a utility called ARK. Previously with ARK I could open .jar and war files. Now I cannot. Can I adjust this somehow? I cannot find any configuration file for this.
