I followed the suggestion of reverting to the earlier kernel - 
2.6.27-7.  The network (which is wired) is currently functioning.  If my 
friend wants a wireless connection, he may have to sort it out for 
himself.  I shall forward the above links.  Thanks for all the suggestions.
