In detail?  Without detailed information from you?  This is sort of like
'my printer isn't working, can you tell me how to fix it?'.  But, I'll try.

Are you connecting to the modem directly? What kind of modem is it?

Typically the setup is this: Plug the network cable into the modem, boot
the system.

If the system is set for DHCP (most are by default I think), then the
system /should/ get an IP address from the modem.  I'm guessing it does
not in your case.

Check your cables first.  Make sure you have link lights on the modem
AND the computer.

Check the computer to make sure the network interface is set for DHCP.
