Why do people detest top posting so much?

But it almost invariably pops up in the form of "why shouldn't I top post?"
Which is to suggest that the poster's opinion of what is right outweighs
the opinions of those already using the list.
And no, I disagree that you can ever make top-posting "easily read" once a
conversation has begun. It's fine for a single question and answer, but it
breaks down completely if you want to respond to things that more than one
person has said in the thread.
