Why do people detest top posting so much?

I can see Steve's view, a volunteer "commits to help anyone and everyone 
without prejudice", but on mailing lists and usenet, you "choose" to help
a particular poster or ignore them, you are under no obligation to do 
anything.

However, it is technical description, most people would accept that those 
who help out here, volunteer their time in doing so, so, IOW, it's just 
a "nit pick" of terms, which more or else equal NOISE on a list.
