OK, I've been reading this thread for a while, and I was just 
wondering... wouldn't Telnet work for what you're trying to do? I read 
the docs on it the other day, and it does have the ability to turn flow 
control off, which I believe is one of the requirements someone stated 
in this thread.

It's already installed on Hardy, but I haven't had a use for it in 
years, since the hackers made the isp's too paranoid to allow you to log 
in with it anymore. Back in the day I used it quite a bit if something 
went wrong, like getting disconnected in the middle of an email download 
session, which resulted in a hung mail queue. It was easy to log into 
the server, and delete the offending message myself, but you can't do 
that anymore.
