VIA video controller colors problem on Hardy

Hello,
A friend of mine has started to use Ubuntu and has installed Hardy on
his desktop. It has an amd64 processor and the video chipset is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. S3 Unichrome
Pro VGA Adapter
When he boots up, the Ubuntu logo is shown in gray scale. Also when he
tries to play a DVD, the video's colors are not correct (somewhat
grayish and other disturbances are there). Other colors though (desktop,
youtube videos, mpeg videos) are alright.
Is this something to do with his video card or chipset? Any suggestions
how to fix this problem? Or any other suggestion to see when his Ubuntu
booting logo is grayscale?
Thanks.
