Can someone explain the output from lsusb here?

I sure hope you don't work for support anywhere, the way you jump to
conclusions. All the test devices (except the 160Gb disk in an
enclosure) worked just fine in other machines running Windows and Linux.
BTW there were seven or eight test devices, not only three.
The USB ports are a long way from all working properly, and it is by no
means certain that the remaining faults lie with my cables or my USB
devices. It is not only possible but probable that the ports are in some
way faulty (though as Dotan suggested, they may just need cleaning).
More investigation is still needed.
