How to really disable GDM automatic login?

Hi all,
I came to Ubuntu using a 8.04 (Hardy?) live cd for reviving
my 5 year old Vaio with a broken keyboard and no USB one at hand,
hence automatic (or timed) login was the option of choice.
After upgrading to 9.04 and now with USB keyboard I'm trying
to disable automatic login (cf. below) without success.
% grep Login /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
# in as user as set with AutomaticLogin key.
AutomaticLoginEnable=false
AutomaticLogin=########
#TimedLoginEnable=true
#TimedLogin=#######
#TimedLoginDelay=10
[obviously irrelevant stuff deleted]
Any ideas why GDM's automatic login still fires on every boot?
Thanks
Siggy
btw: my other machines run Debian lenny and OpenBSD.
