When booting select the recovery option from grub's menu. You may
need to hit ESC fast enough if you have no timeout set.
Next you will be presented a menu with a XFIX option, iirc. Select
this and you may be lucky to get your screen back.
If this doesn't help, there's still a single-user CLI to get at your
files.
