connect to an ISP provider

I looked into the documentation (help.ubuntu.org/9.04/index.html / Internet)

I am not sure what applies: there is a choice: wired / wireless /
mobile broadband / VPN / DSL.
If my wireless connection is active, wireless must apply. But the webpage
doesn't provide any further information from the point where wireless is
active what to to next (?).
I also tried with the fixed ethernet port on my portable  : in Network
Manager, disabled wireless, Edit connections, clicked on 'Wired',
entered the MAC address of my fixed network card, in IPV4 Setting
left Method to Automatic (DHCP) which is the default, clicked
Apply. This created a line "Wired connection 1"
But in Network Manager it says: Wired Network: device not managed (?)


I believe, I really need to do something equivalent as in Windows,
once wireless connection active or wired connection defined :make
the connection with my ISP provider, giving username and password,
but can't find in the doc something about that ...

In the 'community contributed documentation', I also can't find a
setup which mentions entering username and password provided by an
ISP provider (?) help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetHowto
I believe since my wireless say 'connected', the section
'Local Area Network - wireless, ethernet or other' applies,
"if you connect via a router an a home network, ... the default Ubuntu
configuration may work without further configuration", I believe this
sentence applies. But nowhere I find anything about ISP provider and
its username and password.
