Not necessarily. I change back and forth from being hard wired to the
modem to being hard wired to the router and if I haven't forced the
modem to get the router's MAC the network manager, in my case wicd, will
tell me I'm connected to the wired network but I will have no internet
access.

I have 3 different linux distributions on the desktop box and another on
a laptop.All but one was installed after I got broadband and they all
worked out of the box with no passwords or usernames entered.

Not to be obvious but have you tried calling your ISP tech support with
that question?
