Jaunty not starting

On a machine with Jaunty installed, the system is now not booting to a
working environment. After Grub, we get this on the screen and the
boot stops:
* Starting deferred execution scheduler atd    [ OK ]
* Starting periodic command scheduler crond    [ OK ]
* Checking bettery state....    [ OK ]

There is no hard drive activity at this point. Note that this is a
desktop machine with no battery, and the ACPI BIOS settings have not
been changed recently. What must I do to continue booting this
machine? Thanks!
