>From the command line, use su to run a command as root.  I forget what
the command name of "Authorizations" is, but you can right click on your
main menu to edit menus, find the entry and examine it's properties to
find the correct command.

Some commands, which I believe include Synaptic and possibly other
apt-get front ends, use gksu rather than freedesktop policy kit..  See
man gksu for information on how you can configure your preference of
sudo vs su.

And you can ignore the suggestions I've seen on this list than enabling
root password will render your system inoperable in any way.. what a
load of fertilizer.
