Ubuntu's default initrd already includes raid assembly via mdadm, and
does not use kernel auto-detection.  This way is more flexible (since
raid members can be found in logical partitions) and creates it's own
problems (see my earlier warning about hostname caveat).  Either way,
you should not need to build your own initramfs.
