Standard Pidgin-Ubuntu releases are frequently buggy, I don't know
what is the last version at your Synaptic but,
please read:
http://www.pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/
if you include:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu
as an additional repository maybe you can get Ver. 2.58 (just three
files, for Jaunty, at least) if the other dependencies are met.
