@Liam,

I don't know why you would categorize this as a windows way of doing 
things.  Yes, I use windows at my 'day job', but I've been a sysadmin 
for years and run a mixed bunch of distros of Linux at my home.

If you'll review my initial post, which Fred was agreeing with, /home is 
its own partition.

Please elaborate as I'm always interested in learning other ways of 
doing things, but I stand by my initial statement
"Partitioning schemes, including the need for a swap partition, vary 
from user to user - we all have opinions and most are right for our
particular use needs."

What I espoused was what works for me and has for years.
