characters in terminal

Interesting behavior -
New install of 8.04 LTS server.
Added the desktop for a few reasons.
When I open a terminal typing in the termiinal produces black boxes where
the characters should go, but when I hit return, the commands typed appear
as normal.
Is there something in terminal behavior I'm missing? I was wondering if it
might not be a keyboard failure, but since the characters appear as they
should after pressing return, I don't think its a hardware problem.

Anyone seen this in terminal before ?
