Ouch.  Which Ubuntu version do you have?

Which command exactly is segfaulting: sudo, aptitude update or aptitude
safe-upgrade?  You can find out by running them sequentially:

  $ sudo -s
  # aptitude update
  # aptitude upgrade

Can you update with 'apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade'?
