Compiling a new software for your computer used to be the way it was

For most things on Ubuntu you can get them and they also bring all
the other things needed to run the software.

gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4)
So gcc is quite a bit newer than you want.
