This sounds very awkward.

I haven't seen this behavior.

However, did this happen from the very beginning i.e. since you
actually installed Ubuntu 8.04 x64? Or it started to happen at some
point, later on?

Also, if from the Live CD (assuming you still have it) it works, then
it's definitely a setting in your user's environment/profile that has
this unexpected outcome.

What you could also do would be to create some 'test' user and see if,
with the default settings, this is still reproducible.
