Good question. I always assumed this was a static feature of gnome.
The keybinding is definitely set under System > Preferences. I don't
see a preference setting for any kind of application switcher. So
maybe its gone to lala land. In any case, restarting X solves all Alt
key problems. Going into compiz and back out causes problems. Not sure
its 100% of the time or not, but there seems to be a connection
there.
