There are several other ways of getting malware on a Linux box. One of
my favorite to whine about is KDE and Gnome both treating a file
effectively as an executable (albeit, a one line executable) based on
filename extension rather than file permissions (I wonder where they got
that idea from?) Of course, that only allows infection of a user
account rather than the system, but for single user desktops, that's all
that is needed in any case.
But no, I'm not suggesting we push to install AV. The whole concept of
AV (blacklist of known bad software) is horribly horribly backwards and
broken to begin with.
