Sound quits working in Movie Player and VLC after watching videos in Firefox

Hello everyone,

I hope someone can help me figure out why playing videos in Firefox 
shuts down my ability to use any other players to hear audio in videos 
in other players, or when trying to listen to mp3s without rebooting first.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.2 with the newest kernel.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
