strange behavior in gnome-terminal - need to reset to default

I've had problems with this in the past. I think if you bring up a 
menu, then use the mouse or cursor keys to highlight a menu choice, and 
press a key other than Enter, Escape, tab or arrows, that key becomes a 
new shortcut. I don't remember how that got fixed, unless it was by 
upgrading to Jaunty.  Right now I don't have the problem, but I'm using 
Xubuntu with fvwm-crystal as the window manager, so it's quite 
different from a typical Ubuntu desktop.
