I had already turned off effects before running the above. I had killed
evolution and nautilus too. There is not a lot of desktop stuff left outside
of basic gnome stuff. Afterwards, I killed one terminal window and all that
LAMP server stuff, which had negibile impact.

Yea, I know, we are on a tight household budget. My luck is I have two 512
sticks, and need to buy two. If I do two, I might as well do four. I probably
have older/pricier ram too. But yea, I guess the handwriting is on the wall.

Then I have been bit by the intel chipset problem, which has its own set of
performance issues. So I need a new graphics card, I guess.
