kino, xine, mplayer, totem: X11 error: BadAlloc

I found out that avidemux is a much nicer tool than kino; I could edit a
  movie with it. However, my favourite  movie-player: mplayer plays the
sound, but shows only a black image and generates many errors:

X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

totem gives the same error message.

avidemux plays the movie, albeit not smoothly, but reports to be unable
to initialize the sound device.

Maybe this is related to my earlier question about googleearth?
Would appreciate suggestions.
