top shows the memory being used at 494M even before i start any
applications.

as i write this i have claws-mail, firefox, 1 gnome-terminal and update
manager just finished:
ram use 419M, swap 176M on top
ram use 260M, swap 178M on system monitor

i don't understand why top and system monitor are showing such
different values for ram use.
