Netbook Remix refusing connections to its own LAN

I have the Netbook Remix installed on an EeePC 701 on my LAN,
where it is 192.198.1.107; it can connect to machine 192.168.0.100 over
the lan; but that machine gets refused by the 701 -- even when I'm doing
it over an ssh link from the 701!
What I really want is to scp my Alpine files from one to the
other; but that hits the same wall.
What's more, I have those settings also on a CD, which my other
machines read, whether in their own internal drives, or on an external
USB drive. But when I put the Cd in the drive and the USB plug in the
701, the 701 sees the drive, and the top level on the CD, which is a
folder called AlpCfg. But instead of finding the contents, it declared
AllpCfg empty!
