Finding out about devices

I have an old (3 years old) machine I use for a file server. Unfortunately,
it is also old enough that it has a small amount of disk space. I would like
to increase that disk space by adding another internal hard drive. The
problem is that I don't know whether it is able to support serial ATA (which
most of the hard drives sold now seem to be).
How can I find out what my hard disk controller can support? In windows it
is easy using the device manager but I purposely eradicated windows from
this machine.
