While I do speak 4 languages, the truth is that English is, indeed, my
native tongue.
I just don't know what the heck "convertxto-dvd-like" or "classic media
player-like" are.

The fact of the matter is, there are myriads of options for both, DVD
burning and media playback. I just don't know precisely what you're
looking for, because I haven't a clue what "convertxto dvd-like" or
"classic media playerĺike" are (perhaps because I haven't used windows
in nearly a decade now).

Some of the options available to you for in ubuntu, via synaptic include

DVD burning:
Brasero
K3B
Gnomebaker
Nautilus-cd-burner
dvdauthor

For media playback:
Rhythmbox
Totem
Kaffeine
Mplayer
  kplayer
  gnome-mplayer
Amarok
XMMS2
Audacious
Helix player
VLC
xfmedia
gxine
juk
dragonplayer
codeine
muine
sonata
somaplayer
listen

There are more...but, I think you get the idea.
You have a plethora of options at your disposal.

be well,
tony
