This is an answer to your blog rather than directly to this post.  You refer 
to Virtual Box as the, as yet, unclimbed mountain peak.

Recently I had to install a virtual machine on a Kubuntu installation.  I 
chose Virtual Box.

$ sudo aptitude install virtualbox

That's it:  you will be gently led by the hand to get it up and running; or by 
the nose, if you prefer. ;-)

You will find that that apparent Everest of a problem is actually the 
proverbial molehill.
