i think that ooo is very competitive with ms office. many other countries
in the world use ooo exclusively. with the odbc connector you can open a ms
access db. at one time i could edit the access db, but i have forgotten
how, at least recently i could get ooo base to edit the access db. ooo
opens and saves to excel, powerpoint and word and math type, but not the
other way around.
linux is the number one server platform with apache, mysql and php.
"ms"ites know no other way than the redmond way and they don't mind spending
the cash to stay current.
sure, some programs stop working when you update the the latest version of
linux, but it's not really tied to hardware that i know of. windows 7 is
due to be released the end of this year. ms just rolled out the rc this
week. like vista, this is hardware specific. linux like older hardware and
the developer community seem to be adding new hardware to the list of
supported items.
most hardware manufacturers make hardware for windows based systems, but
there are some manufacturers that support linux as well. they may not put
that in their advertisements, because of agreements with ms, but they do
support it and if they don't, like the logitech thread earlier, linux finds
a way to support the hardware. maybe not with all of the bells and
whistles, but functional.
but i digress. software is software and linux has a lot of software that
rubs redmonds nose in it. besides, ms doesn't make a lot of software. they
have their office suite, ms server, sql, and virtual software. as far as
virtual software goes, there is better virtual software out there than ms.
ms is having to play catch up, but the open source community has a larger
lead and far more help than redmond. proprietary software will one day be
found in the smithsonian right next to the first pc and mac. there are more
proponents for open source software than there are proprietary.
cheers,
