It would probably be a good idea for you to read the following
documentation from the Ubuntu wiki before you change your system. There
are good reasons that the Ubuntu developers have chosen to not have a root
password. Naturally, you can run your system any way you choose, it's
just a good idea to understand the security choices the Ubuntu developers
made.
