Graphics memory corruption on an old HP Omnibook with Intel chipset

Hi!
Just installed 9.04 on an OLD HP Omnibook laptop with an Intel Chipset.
I think it's shared memory, but not sure.
In any case, after a few moments of work (more like, after opening a few
apps) I start getting bad characters on screen (as if the font was
corrupted)... then pixels go bad as well.
This on an absolutely FRESH install. Simply running Synaptics and a pair
of local apps does it.
Any idea what could be going wrong?
Is there a way to specify to the Xorg server to limit amount of graphics
memory to use? Or can I force it to use a different driver (maybe the
driver is buggy) like VESA?
Thanks,
Gilles
