I installed Songbird on your recommendation. Ifinally got it working
fine, but it sucks up too much of my of my CPU (2.4Ghz/1GB ram). In
this case, playing one song the cpu varies from 58.7 to 25.2:

$ top |grep songbird
20   0  320m 100m  33m R 58.7 10.1   1:17.42 songbird-bin
20   0  320m 100m  33m S 27.9 10.1   1:18.26 songbird-bin
20   0  320m 100m  33m R 34.2 10.1   1:19.29 songbird-bin
20   0  320m 100m  33m R 27.5 10.1   1:20.12 songbird-bin
20   0  320m 100m  33m R 33.2 10.1   1:21.12 songbird-bin
20   0  320m 100m  33m R 27.2 10.1   1:21.94 songbird-bin
20   0  320m 100m  33m R 36.6 10.1   1:23.04 songbird-bin
20   0  320m 100m  33m R 25.2 10.1   1:23.80 songbird-bin

Same song/file in Rhythmbox:
$ top |grep rhythmbox
20   0  209m  42m  23m S 11.8  4.3   0:07.85 rhythmbox
20   0  209m  42m  23m S  9.0  4.3   0:08.12 rhythmbox
20   0  209m  42m  23m S  7.6  4.3   0:08.35 rhythmbox
20   0  209m  42m  23m S  8.3  4.3   0:08.60 rhythmbox
20   0  209m  42m  23m S  8.3  4.3   0:08.85 rhythmbox
20   0  209m  42m  23m S  8.6  4.3   0:09.11 rhythmbox
