In Ubuntu you do it pretty much the same way. At login when it asks for your
username and password, you can change your "session" type. Find the control
on the login page thats called "Options". It may be named something else
depending on your theme. Then select "Select Session". It should show a
couple options including Gnome and possibly, KDE if you have it installed.
It might additionally ask you if you want to set the current "session" type
as your default. Do as you please. But if you want to set your default
manually, do the following:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
click ok.... ( press enter )
it will give you options... gdm / kdm......
select kdm.......
