Simple photo improvements: Fotoxx or alternatives?

I remember gthumb to have a magic operation called "Enhance". I never
investigated what it actually did, but in many test cases it gave
surprisingly pleasing results.

Normally I fear buttons supposing to automatically do what I want before
I could tell them what I want.
