I have had good luck with xubuntu on slower machines, and if you stick with abiword there are a hsot of plugins to give it just the functionality you need!! There was a recent comparison of xubu to Debian running xfce, and the reviewer found Debian to run noticeably faster using the xfce desktop. Frank
