Have you tried KDE recently?

That aside, you could also simply have tried man nautilus, and there you
would have noticed

--no-desktop
              Do  not  manage  the  desktop — ignore the preference set
in the preferences dialog.


It would have been my preference if the toggle was the opposite
(nautilus would only mange the desktop if explicitly requested with a
switch.), but on the list of things I would change if I were king of the
world, that's relatively low.
