Unfortunately it was a no go. Below is what happened. Hope it helps.

I was, however, able to at least install the xfce4-mixer but problem was
it didn't seem to recognize the sound card (said it was some SigmaTel ..
but actual card is an ensoniq AudioPCI). There's an in-built audio card
on my mobo but I have shut it off completely long ago in the BIOS and
sound had been working perfectly before the install last night. It leads
me to believe I'm still missing something or whatever I've installed to
date "broke" the drivers for my sound care. *sighs* It's not the end of
the world but it is a pain in the you know what.
