thomson TG585v7 router set up

My thanks to all who have tried to help me so far but, as yet, I am
still not connected. I have other computers in the house which connect
wirelessly to my old router so I connected the Thomson router to the
power, nothing else, and checked on one of the other machines. Sure
enough, the Thomson was seen. I entered the WEP key and connected to the
router. I could also get the set up website but could go no further
because the router was not connected to the broadband.

A further observation about the PC to which the router is connected by
the Ethernet cable. The little Network Monitor icon on the top panel
shows no valid connections and, as far as I can remember, never has
whereas, on my other machines it indicates when connected.
