No, that is not rubbish. But we don't know if both computers are in the
same room, or other reasons why a direct cable link would be impractical.

Agreed.
I have 4 "routers": Sitecom DSL modem/router, Linksys WRT54g[1], Asus
WL500gP[1], and Cisco 2600[2][3]
The Linksys and the Asus are both in the same subnet, but only one of
them has DHCP enabled.
[1] of course both of them flashed with OpenWRT [2]
[2] for extra bragging rights ;-)
[3] and of course to pass for my CCNA exams last year. Very useful if
you can practice on the real thing.
