Wireless and Ubuntu

Are you sure it is 9.10? That would be alpha software which is not 
recommended for beginners. I would assume it is more likely you have 
9.04 installed.

As you didn't tell us anything about the wireless device (except that it 
is USB), it isn't easy to help. Maybe you could start looking here 
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs> and follow the link(s) 
appropriate for your device.

If that doesn't help already, please give us some specific information 
about the device. It would be especially useful to open a terminal and 
type the command

lsusb

while the device is plugged in. Then copy and paste the output of the 
command to your reply mail.
