Update manager goes berserk -- what have I wrought?

Folks,
For some reason (probably having to do with something I added to
sources.list), apt-get update has started taking forrrrr-ever. I'm
running Jaunty 64-bit. The update function starts out with
ftp://debian.org sid/main/Sources (two other Sid directories follow).
The update appears to be trying to convert files as it goes. From
what to what, I don't know. I've tried renaming the old list file
in /ect/apt and starting fresh. But the same thing happens. And when I
look at the sources.list files in the other subdirectories in /etc/apt,
they make no reference to my unwelcomed guest Sid.
Where else should I be looking to turn this conversion sequence off?
With best regards,
Pete
