I always use (hd0) as the place to write the boot material.
My system had /dev/sda9 which has Jaunty, as the grub 1 source
and it listed all the partitions as expected. Then I loaded
Karmic Beta at /dev/sda8 and that went fine.
Now my grub2 lists all the partitions and it is fine too. I
have not found any problem with grub 2 yet.
